Anzac Cricket Game: Interpretation

The Anzac Cricket was a ploy by the Anzac’s to deceive the Turkish into making seem everything was “okay” in the Australian trenches and camps. They used the cricket game as a disguise as they evacuated Anzac Cove.

The game represented key traits of the Australian army in a whole. Confidence, Determination, perseverance, courage, Teamwork, Comradery, Charismatic and compassion all of these traits are reflected in a team sport. The game was significant to Australia as it proves that the Australians were, even in defeat, supportive of one another. Whether it is on a Cricket field or a battle ground the Australian soldiers express their teamwork and their determination by having the back of their brothers. In order to succeed the Australians needed to work together to the end. Even though the Australian army retreated shortly after the game, Morale was high and the friendships intact, because the Australian spirit never wavers.

I chose this video because it conveys the Australian spirit of never giving up and teamwork. AFL is the iconic Australian sport and has a history of great moments, terrible defeats and absolute highs, but through it all high professionalism and teamwork is kept at an extremely high standard. The games are played on a field just like a battle, and the players, soldiers. All time on the AFL field, just like the trenches, the boys are supportive and competitive and this speaks volume about the game.
